Daniel Charles Haskett, 21, pleaded guilty in May 2007 to one count of animal cruelty and one count of obstruction of justice.
He admitted to helping bind Daisy Duke, a Lab-border-collie cross, before dragging her behind a car.
Daisy was found barely alive and was immediately destroyed by a veterinarian because of the severity of her injuries.
Crown prosecutor Gord Haight argued Haskett deserved jail time for torturing a pet that was part of the family.
He is to serve his sentence on weekends.

<![CDATA[Bruce Friedrich: Top 10 Reasons to Pardon a Turkey this Thanksgiving ]]>Sat, 22 Nov 2008 07:38:43 -0800http://www.veganbliss.com/17/post/2008/11/bruce-friedrich-top-10-reasons-to-pardon-a-turkey-this-thanksgiving.html
Originally posted on The Huggington Post

Did Sarah Palin's recent interview in front of a turkey slaughter operation cause you to almost lose your lunch? If so, you're not alone. Even conservative pundit Joe Scarborough says he may well skip the bird this year. With Thanksgiving upon us, here without further ado are PETA's top ten reasons to pardon a turkey this Holiday season:

10. If you wouldn't eat your cat, you shouldn't eat a turkey.
As poultry scientist Tom Savage says, "I've always viewed turkeys as smart animals with personality and character, and keen awareness of their surroundings. The 'dumb' tag simply doesn't fit." They're as interesting and have personalities every bit as developed as any dog or cat.

When they're not forced to live on filthy factory farms, turkeys spend their days caring for their young, building nests, foraging for food, taking dustbaths, preening themselves, and roosting high in trees. These social, playful birds relish having their feathers stroked and like to chirp, cluck, and gobble along to their favorite tunes.

9. Factory farms deny turkeys everything natural to them.
Ben Franklin called turkeys "true American originals." He had tremendous respect for their resourcefulness, agility, and beauty. In nature, turkeys can fly 55 miles an hour, run 25 miles an hour, and live up to four years. Yet turkeys raised for food are killed when they are only 5 or 6 months old, and during their short lives, they will be denied even the simplest pleasures, like running, building nests, and raising their young.

8. Turkey consumption may kill you.
Turkey flesh is brimming with fat and cholesterol. Just one homemade patty of ground, cooked turkey meat contains a whopping 244 mg of cholesterol, and half of its calories come from fat. Turkey flesh is also frequently tainted with salmonella, campylobacter bacteria, and other contaminants. And a vegan meal won't leave you sprawled on the couch, belt buckle undone, barely able to move.

7. You may stave off bird flue apocalypse.
Current factory-farm conditions, in which turkeys are drugged and bred to grow so quickly that many become crippled and die from dehydration, are breeding grounds for disease. Cooking meat should kill the bird flu virus, but it can be left behind on cutting boards and utensils and spread through something else you're eating.

6. Don't support their crack habit.
Dosing turkeys with antibiotics to stimulate their growth and to keep them alive in filthy, disease-ridden conditions that would otherwise kill them poses even more risks for people who eat them. Leading health organizations--including the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, and the American Public Health Association--have warned that the farmed-animal industry is creating possible long-term risks to human health and will spread antibiotic-resistant supergerms. That's why the use of drugs to promote growth in animals used for food has been banned for many years in Europe.

5. There are healthy, humane alternatives
Everyone can give thanks for Tofurky, Celebration Roast, Garden Protein's new Veggie Turkey Breast With Wild Rice and Cranberry Stuffing, and other animal-friendly holiday meals. PETA's scrumptious holiday recipes will please every palate and make it easier to give up the giblets.

4. Eating birds supports cruelty to animals.
When the time comes for slaughter, turkeys are thrown into transport trucks, and at the slaughterhouse, they are hung upside-down and their heads are dragged through an electrified "stunning tank," which immobilizes them but does not kill them. Many birds dodge the tank and are still conscious when their throats are slit. If the knife fails to properly slit the birds' throats, the birds are scalded to death in the defeathering tanks.

3. Turkey consumption is bad for the environment.
Turkeys and other animals raised for food produce 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population--all without the benefit of waste treatment systems. There are no federal guidelines to regulate how factory farms treat, store, and dispose of the trillions of pounds of concentrated, untreated animal excrement that they produce each year.

2. Which contributes to human starvation.
You have to feed a turkey grains, soy, oats, and corn that could otherwise be fed to human beings. Only a fraction of the calories fed to a turkey are turned into meat calories. While there is ample and justified moral indignation about the diversion of 100 million tons of grain for biofuels, more than seven times as much (760 million tons) is fed to farmed animals so that people can eat meat. Is the diversion of crops to our cars a moral issue? Yes, but it's about one-eighth the issue that meat-eating is.

And the number one reason to give the birds a break:
Factory-farmed turkeys have nothing to be thankful for
On factory farms, turkeys live for months in sheds where they are packed so tightly that flapping a wing or stretching a leg is nearly impossible. They stand mired in waste, and urine and ammonia fumes burn their eyes and lungs. To keep the birds from killing one another in such crowded conditions, parts of the turkeys' toes and beaks are cut off, as are the males' snoods (the flap of skin under the chin). All this is done without any pain relievers.

A PETA investigator recently went undercover at a massive turkey breeding facility in West Virginia and documented workers stomping on turkeys, punching them, beating them with pipes and boards, and twisting their necks repeatedly. One worker even bragged about shoving a broomstick down a turkey's throat because the bird had pecked at him. Our previous investigations show that such gratuitous abuse is the norm on turkey farms.

Check out www.VegCooking.com for tasty alternatives that will allow the turkeys to give thanks this Holiday season along with you and your family.

Happy eating!

<![CDATA[Kathy Freston Article]]>Sat, 08 Nov 2008 08:19:34 -0800http://www.veganbliss.com/17/post/2008/11/kathy-freston-article.htmlIf you could peer into a giant factory farm where animals are mass produced and then killed to become our food, you might wonder how we, as a decent and humane people have arrived at this place. What you would see is this:

1. Egg laying hens, crammed by the bunch, into a tiny wire cage stacked one upon the other for what seems like miles. They cannot spread their wings, and they are driven mad by the 1-2 years (the length of their miserable lives) of extreme confinement.

2. Mother pigs enclosed in a metal frame barely bigger than their bodies for months on end. The gestating pigs can hardly move, and they endure extreme discomfort and frustration. Did you know, by the way, that pigs are more cognizant than a three year old child and smarter than your pet dog?

3. Veal calves that have been ripped from their mothers at birth and shackled with a chain around their necks in what amounts to a dark box. They are kept in this state of intense captivity so that their muscles remain tender, hence they are often dragged to slaughter unable to walk on undeveloped legs.

Imagine, if you will, that it is you who is locked in a tiny dark space, unable to move, day after maddening day, month after torturous month. You suffer endlessly without a kind gesture or moment of relief. You have done nothing wrong, and you will ultimately die so someone can dine on your flesh.

<![CDATA[Dawn Watch: Shocking hen footage on ABC- Go ahead all of you, keep eating those eggs, but read this first...]]>Sun, 19 Oct 2008 10:35:50 -0800http://www.veganbliss.com/17/post/2008/10/dawn-watch-shocking-hen-footage-on-abcgo-ahead-all-of-you-keep-eating-those-eggs-but-read-this-first.htmlWith California's Proposition 2 aimed at banning battery cages for hens, as well as crates for veal calves and sows, Dan Noyes's ABC 7 report showing undercover footage from a California egg farm could not have come at a better time.

On Monday, October 13, the anchor opened the report with:
"Have you thought about where the eggs for your breakfast come from? We're getting the first look at new undercover video taken at a Southern California egg ranch -- one of the biggest in the state. It is part of the Proposition 2 campaign to improve conditions for farm animals. "

The I Team report, by Dan Noyes, shared footage taken by an undercover investigator for Mercy for Animals (Check out www.mercyforanimals.org ) at Norco Farms in Menifee during August and September.

The investigator told us:
"All of the birds were confined in cages that were so small they couldn't stretch their wings and they couldn't walk or turn around without being in constant contact with other birds or the walls of the cages. Some of the cages were so overcrowded that the birds literally had to lie on top of each other."

And reporter Dan Noyes reminded us:
"That is the simple point of Prop. 2 -- 'to prohibit the cruel confinement of farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs.'"

As this was a report, not an opinion piece, those on both sides of the issue were given airtime and the egg producers defended their practices. But the video said it all. We saw much of the following, as Noyes narrated:

"The investigator found badly decomposed carcasses in cages with hens still producing eggs for human consumption. Eggs on a conveyor belt bounced off the head of one dead bird. Other live chickens were stuck in the cages, and the investigator says the injured were left to suffer."

We saw an egg covered in blood and were told:
"And a prolapse is where a chicken has laid enough eggs or a particularly large egg so that her uterus turns inside out and then she's bleeding from the wound and eventually all of her insides spill out from her cavity."

You can watch the report on line at:
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/iteam&id=6447851
of just read it if you already know the importance of Proposition 2 and don't have the stomach to watch.

Please let Dan Noyes and the I Team know how much we appreciate the airing of this undercover video. Positive feedback for animal stories always encourages more of them. Go to
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/feature?section=resources&id=5792275
and select ABC I Team from the pull-down menu.

You can also comment on the web page right below the story (URL above) where you have the opportunity to influence other viewers. Please do.

Please forward the story to everybody you know in California -- especially those who might think they are in a safe seat neighborhood, who might not be planning to get out and vote. The animals need every single compassionate person to vote for Prop 2. While sadly cage free doesn't mean cruelty free, the bill will at least end some of this heinous suffering caused by life in tiny cages for millions of animals -- hens, calves, and pigs.

<![CDATA[Gracie & Pumpkin Benefit]]>Thu, 09 Oct 2008 08:56:34 -0800http://www.veganbliss.com/17/post/2008/10/graciepumpkin-benefit.html

The Gracie & Pumpkin Sale

From Nicole http://latejuly.etsy.com and Dawn http://fashionsplatter.etsy.com
(thanks so much to Marjorie http://whskr.etsy.com for putting this post together for us!)
These are stories of hopes and dreams. Gracie is a charming and sweet 2 year old Shar-pei mix found as a stray in the worst possible condition. Pumpkin is a cat found shot with a brutal arrow, a story that shocked many of us.
I'll be brief, but here's the outline about both our fund raising aims. Gracie has skin issues that have taken time and a lot of money to heal, she needs vital remedial training to give her the confidence to mix with other dogs before she takes that crucial step to the new forever home waiting for her. Pumpkin needs help with medication and surgery fees after his desperate injury.
Gracie needs $250 initially to engage a trainer to help plus anther $200 to guarantee her the training to be able to walk out into the world with her head held high - a totally confident young dog.
Pumpkin's needs are still being assessed but his operation costs and medication will need to be met, to ensure he remains free from infection after his amputation. A three legged cat can do just fine, thank you!
Two among many, we know, but we can make a difference here. The following Etsy sellers have offered items for sale to help both Pumpkin and Gracie. Their generosity is overwhelming, and we are grateful. Please check out the following sellers and items.

<![CDATA[Argentine dog saves abandoned baby]]>Fri, 29 Aug 2008 09:00:04 -0800http://www.veganbliss.com/17/post/2008/08/argentine-dog-saves-abandoned-baby.htmlBy Daniel Schweimler
BBC News, Buenos Aires

An eight-year-old dog has touched the hearts of Argentines by saving the life of an abandoned baby, placing him safely alongside her own new puppies.

The country's media are calling him "the miracle baby".

He was born prematurely to a 14-year-old girl in a shanty town outside the capital, Buenos Aires.

She is said to have panicked and abandoned the boy in a field, surrounded by wooden boxes and rubbish.

Then along came La China, the dog which somehow picked up the baby and carried him 50m to place him alongside her own puppies.

The dog's owner heard the child crying and found him covered with a rag being safely guarded by the mama dog as one of her own pups.

The baby, weighing 4kg (8lb 13oz), had some slight injuries, but no bite marks. The owner called the police and the child is now being looked after by the authorities, while a decision is taken about his future.

The frightened mother appeared shortly after her baby was found.

The Argentine media has descended on the shanty town, talking of "the Argentine Romulus and Remus", the founders of Rome, abandoned as babies and rescued by a wolf, nearly 3,000 years ago.

Late July Photography Blog

Bonnie in Dire Need

Hi there,

As some of you know I am a volunteer special needs rescue coordinator. Two
weeks ago thanks to much support from etsy teams I was able to get an eye
surgery and find a home for a beautiful cat.

The same day she got her surgery Bonnie came in - a small mutt, emaciated,
covered with soars from mange and allergies. They said that they wouldn't
put bonnie to sleep if I could help her. So here I am, but her vet bills
are extensive and rescues are full full full this time of year (anywhere in
North America). So I am fundraising Bonnie's vet bills. Her visit to the
vet last night yielded $400, as we try to sort through this young girls
issues (she's only two). You can see her on my blog
www.latejulyphotography.blogspot.com

Everything in my store www.latejuly.etsy.com is 1/2 off right now all going
towards Bonnie's care. Once she is stable enough I will be taking her home
to foster and rehabilitate her.

So i am asking if you could copy and paste her into your blogs, where ever
you can.. I'm looking for any size of donations $5 whatever. I hate asking
its just I've never had a dog in this rough of shape before. She's going to
be ok with the right help!
